Service
For businesses whose customers search with a place in mind. The work is getting found in the map pack across the whole service area, not just from the postcode the office happens to sit in.
Service businesses and multi-location operators competing against national booking platforms and aggregators that outrank them on their own service terms.
Usually because Google is ranking their profile, not their website, and theirs is more complete. The profile decides most local results before the site is even considered.

Written down here so it is not a conversation you have to have later.
A local business usually knows it has a problem before it knows what the problem is. Calls are down, the owner searches the service term from the office, sees the business in the map pack, and concludes that search is fine.
It is not fine. Local ranking varies street by street. From the office you might sit first. Two miles away, where most of your customers actually are, you might not appear at all. The office is the one place your ranking is guaranteed to look good, and it is the least useful place to check.
That is what a geo-grid rank map is for. It runs the same search from a lattice of points across your service area and records the position from each one. The result is a picture of where you are actually found, which is almost never the picture the owner had in mind.
It is also the honest way to report progress. A single rank number can be cherry picked. A grid across forty nine points cannot, and month over month it shows movement that a summary figure would hide.
If you run several locations, the usual failure is that the location pages are duplicates of each other with the city name swapped. Google treats them as one page worth of value split several ways, and the pages compete rather than compound.
Fixing that is mostly structural: giving each location page a reason to exist that is specific to that location, and making the internal linking reflect how the business actually operates.
A complimentary audit call, usually alongside a geo-grid scan of your current position, which shows the problem faster than any conversation about it does.
